More Than Just Hot Air: The Makita MAC700 Big Bore Air-Compressor

Although it’s often a lot more exciting to post about the newest and most advanced tools on the market, it’s equally vital that we take a step back and look at the tools that have stood the test of time and continue to be valuable pieces in our workshops. There is no shortage of these types, as I’m sure you’re aware. With anything ranging from the traditional hammer to the tape measure, we could amass a list of timeless classics that you couldn’t work without. However, there is one, in particular, that may be a little more subtle, but no less critical. I’m talking about air-compressors, and more specifically, the Makita MAC700. I like to compare air-compressors to an offensive line in football. It’s not flashy and may go unnoticed, but if you get a bad one, you will be left with a lot of tools with nothing to power them. Many of us forget about how much we rely on our air-compressor, but we would surely be in a bind if it all of a sudden decided to stop working. The 4 here only means that this motor uses 4 magnets to produce torque as opposed to 2. This will allow for higher torque at a slower RPM. This essentially means that it will be quieter and more productive than other compressors, which brings us to what Makita claims to be the star of this product: The Big Bore cylinder and piston. To understand why and how this is beneficial, we need a brief rundown of how air-compressors work. Air compressors use their motors to move a piston up and down. When the piston moves down, it creates a vacuum in the cylinder. This pulls air from outside into the cylinder through a one-way valve. When the piston moves back up, it pushes the air through another valve and into the tank. It does this until the tank is full at a specific pressure. So, when we equip an air-compressor with a wider cylinder and piston, more air is moved through into the tank at one time. The result is going to be a far superior recovery time, which in turn increases efficiency.

So far, we have determined that the Makita MAC700 air-compressor features a compact and convenient design that doesn’t sacrifice productivity, thanks to the clever mechanics of the 4-pole motor and Big Bore cylinder and piston, but what do other people think?


It’s only beneficial to talk about the mechanics up until a certain point, being where most of us (those of us that are not engineers) lose interest and scope of understanding. What is most impressive about this compressor is not the compact design or clever mechanics, but it’s incredible reputation. A wave of excitement about battery-powered tools has flooded the industry, yet this Makita MAC700 continues not only to sell in big numbers but to receive high praise. This is because it’s tried and true. Makita has this compressor figured out, and no matter how much time goes by, it continues to deliver reliable and trustworthy results. I can’t seem to find one poor review of this compressor, and that’s hard to say for others.
